LAST BOAT TO AMERICA

brief summary:

boy meets girl under extreme circumstances

the boy is mads (25) and the girl is louise (30), both danish. the beginning of the film lays out their separate lives in two different cities, copenhagen and new york

mads is a clerk at netto, a danish discount supermarket chain. one day at work while unpacking a banana box, he finds two kilos of cocaine and decides to try and sell them. this unleashes a series of terrible events, bringing a true sense of horror in motion. mads survives, and now armed with a bag full of cocaine, and two murders under his belt, escapes copenhagen for new york to seek out his childhood friend, philip.

mads is in new york less than 24 hours when he meets louise

louise has lived in new york her entire adult life. she came to ny as the child of a diplomat. the fashion industry quickly discovered her. over the years louise got hooked on the fast money, drugs and alcohol -her marriage is collapsing and her career is in shambles. we view her last days of down fall and then her decision to deal with her addiction and start living a clean life free of mind-altering substances

at this point louise meets mads

by coincidence they meet -- or more aptly -- collide in a manhattan diner. they fall intensely in love, both blind to the other person’s past, and what they’re getting themselves into. although they are melted together in romance, and new beginnings, mads and louise still both have their dramatic needs intact - louise wants to stay clean and sober, and mads still wants to sell his cocaine

LAST BOAT TO AMERICA is a modern, yet classic love story,- with an undercurrent of irrationalism, naïve crime and addiction

the final moments of the film delve into the supernatural and open a door to the great unknown, ultimately making the tragic thread of the film and its brutal ending, seem sublime
